What it means
By means of; through: names the method, channel or experience by which something is achieved.
How it is built
通过 + method or means，subject + result: 通过这次旅行，我了解了很多当地的文化 (Through this trip I learned a lot about the local culture). 通过 can also follow the subject.
When to use it
Neutral. 经过 means having gone through a process or place: 经过讨论, 'after discussion'. 通过 is also a verb: to pass an exam or a law (通过考试).
Watch out
The main clause still needs a subject: ✗ 通过这次旅行，使我了解了很多 ✓ 通过这次旅行，我了解了很多. 通过 + 使 with no subject is a classic error.
Examples
通过修建基础设施，加强沿线国家之间的联系。
By building infrastructure, links between the countries along the route are strengthened.
通过这次旅行，我了解了很多当地的文化。
Through this trip I learned a lot about the local culture.
