Learn Chinese with Bao is a Chinese course on the web. We do not show ads and we do not track you across other sites. This page explains what data exists, where it is kept and why.
Your account
If you create an account, we keep your email address and a password (stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider, Supabase; we never see it). We use your email to sign you in, to send the messages you ask for (confirming your address, resetting your password) and to answer you when you write to us. We do not send marketing email.
Your progress
Your progress (lessons completed, review cards, settings, words you save, text you write in the app) is saved in your browser on this device. When you are signed in, the same record is also saved to your account so that it follows you to other devices. It is stored with Supabase (Supabase Inc.), in a database where each record can be read and changed only by its own signed-in user. Without an account, nothing leaves your device.
Payments
Subscriptions are processed by Stripe (Stripe, Inc.). Stripe collects your card details on its own secure page; we never see or store them. Stripe tells us which account has which subscription, its status and its renewal date, and we keep that record so the app knows whether Pro is active. Stripe's privacy policy: stripe.com/privacy.
Speech
Some dialogues use recordings made for the course; other audio is spoken by your device's or browser's built-in voices. Depending on your browser, that text may be processed by the browser's speech service. We do not record your voice.
How the course is used
To improve the course, the app sends a few anonymous events: a lesson was opened, a drill was finished (with its score), a lesson was marked done, the subscription page was shown, Subscribe was pressed, an account was created. Each event carries the lesson, the app version and a random number made on your device (not your name or email; if you are signed in, it is linked to your account). We use them only to see which lessons are hard or where learners stop. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and does not follow you across sites.
Invite links
If you create an account through a friend's invite link, we record that the two accounts are linked, so your friend can get their reward when you subscribe. Your friend sees only how many people joined and subscribed through their link, never your email or anything you do in the course.
Reports you send
If you use "Report a mistake", we receive what you chose and wrote, the word or sentence it is about and where in the app it was. We use it only to fix the course.
Service providers
- Supabase: accounts, saved progress, usage events and reports (supabase.com/privacy).
- Stripe: payments (stripe.com/privacy).
- [YOUR HOSTING PROVIDER, e.g. Cloudflare]: delivers the website and keeps standard server logs for security.
What we do not do
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No cookies for tracking and no tracking across other sites or apps.
- No sale or sharing of personal data.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your account and progress while your account exists. To delete your account and everything saved with it, write to us from your account's email address and we will delete it within 30 days. Payment records that the law requires us to keep (invoices) are kept by Stripe for as long as required.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it or delete it, and, where the law gives you the right, object to how we use it. Write to the address below.
Children
The course is meant for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; if you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
