What it means
'In response to this; regarding this' (= 对于这件事): points back to the whole situation just described and brings in someone's reaction to it.
How it is built
Situation。 + 对此 + ， + party + 表示／回应称／解释…, or party + 对此 + reaction: 公司对此深表歉意 (the company deeply apologised for this).
When to use it
The hinge of almost every news report: a claim, then 对此, then the response (表示, 回应称, 不予置评). Formal; it also fits an interviewer's question: 对此，你怎么看？ In casual talk say 这件事….
Watch out
Not for cause and effect: ✗ 他病了，对此没来上课 ✓ 他病了，因此没来上课. 为此 means for this reason or to this end (为此专门开了一次会).
Examples
不少家长质疑食堂的进货渠道。对此，学校回应称，所有的肉和菜都由区里统一配送。
Many parents questioned where the canteen gets its supplies. In response, the school said all its meat and vegetables are delivered centrally by the district.
