What it means
“Besides, in addition”: opens a sentence or clause that adds one more point to what has just been said.
How it is built
Sentence。此外，+ extra point, or 此外还／也 + verb: 这家酒店离机场很近。此外，早餐是免费的 (the hotel is near the airport; what is more, breakfast is free).
When to use it
The written partner of 另外, typical of reports, notices and essays. In a negative it can mean “apart from this, nothing”: 他只写过这一本书，此外没有别的作品.
Watch out
Unlike 除了, it takes no object: ✗ 此外他，大家都去了。 ✓ 除了他以外，大家都去了。 For a contrast use 不过 or 但是, not 此外.
Examples
大熊猫每天要花十几个小时吃竹子。此外，它还要花很多时间睡觉。
A panda spends over ten hours a day eating bamboo. On top of that, it needs a great deal of time to sleep.
这家酒店离机场很近，房间也很干净。此外，早餐是免费的。
The hotel is close to the airport and the rooms are clean. What is more, breakfast is free.
学校为新生准备了宿舍和饭卡，此外还安排了高年级的同学带他们参观校园。
The school got dormitory places and meal cards ready for the new students, and besides that arranged for older students to show them round.
