What it means
增加了 + the amount added (“increased by”); 增加到 + the new total (“increased to”). This is the language of reports and news.
How it is built
Old figure + 增加到（了） + new total, or 增加了 + difference: 员工从两百人增加到五百人，增加了三百人 (staff rose from 200 to 500, up 300).
When to use it
Same split for 提高了／提高到, 减少了／减少到, 下降了／下降到. With 倍: 增加了一倍 = doubled = 增加到两倍; 增加了两倍 = tripled. Gaps between percentages are 百分点.
Watch out
✗ 增加了两倍 for “doubled” ✓ 增加了一倍. 24%→52% is 增加了28个百分点, not 28%. A fall is not counted in 倍: ✗ 减少了一倍 ✓ 减少了一半.
Examples
1978年，女生只占大学生的四分之一左右；四十年后，这个比例增加到了一半以上，增加了一倍多。
In 1978 women were only about a quarter of university students; forty years later the share had risen to over half, more than double.
公司的员工从两百人增加到了五百人，三年里增加了三百人。
The company’s staff grew from two hundred to five hundred: three hundred more in three years.
今年的收入比去年增加了一倍。
This year’s income is double last year’s.
