Structure
（先）A ， 进而 B
What it means
“And then, going a step further”: B builds on A and goes beyond it, usually with the same subject.
How it is built
（先）A，进而 + verb phrase B: 这种做法先在几个城市试行，进而推广到全国 (it was first tried in a few cities, then extended nationwide).
When to use it
Written and formal; in speech say 然后 or 接着. Often answers 先 or 首先. 从而 is close but gives the result or purpose (“thereby”); 进而 stresses the next, higher step.
Watch out
Not for adding two unrelated things (that is 而且) or for a contrast (that is 然而). ✗ 他会唱歌，进而会跳舞 ✓ 他会唱歌，而且会跳舞.
Examples
从教她用手机开始，我慢慢明白了她的担心，进而理解了她们那一代人。
Starting from teaching her to use her phone, I gradually came to understand her worries, and from there her whole generation.
这种做法先在几个城市试行，进而推广到了全国。
The practice was first tried out in a few cities and then extended to the whole country.
长期睡眠不足会影响情绪，进而影响工作和学习。
Too little sleep over a long time affects your mood, and that in turn affects your work and studies.
