越来越

more and more, …er and …er

Structure
主语 + 越来越 + 形容词/心理动词 (+ 了 )

What it means

越来越 + adjective shows a change over time: “more and more”, “…er and …er”. 天气越来越冷了 “It’s getting colder and colder.”

How it is built

Subject + 越来越 + adjective or feeling verb (+ 了): 我越来越喜欢北京了 (I like Beijing more and more).

When to use it

Because it shows a change, it usually ends with 了. 越 on its own appears in 越…越… “the more…, the more…”: 雨越下越大 (The rain is getting heavier and heavier).

Watch out

越来越 already means “more”, so never add 很, 非常 or 更 after it. ✗ 越来越很冷 ✓ 越来越冷
