特别 · 十分 · 挺 · 好
especially, very · quite · so
Structure
特别/十分 + 形容词 · 挺 + 形容词 + ( 的 ) · 好 + 形容词 (+ 啊 )
What it means
Four words that make an adjective stronger: 特别 “especially, very”, 十分 “very”, 挺 “quite, pretty”, and 好 “so …!”.
How it is built
特别/十分 + adjective; 挺 + adjective (+ 的): 这个地方挺漂亮的 (This place is quite pretty). 好 + adjective (+ 啊): 今天好热啊! (It’s so hot today!)
When to use it
特别 is strong and very common in speech. 十分 is like 非常 (h1-18) but sounds written, mostly before two-syllable words: 十分重要. 挺 is casual, often with 的 at the end: 挺好的.
Watch out
In 好冷啊! the 好 means “so”, not “good”. 十分 sounds written; with friends, 特别冷 or 挺冷的 is more natural.
