予以／给予

Structure
给予 （对象） 支持／帮助／评价 ； 对 对象 予以 表彰／支持／处罚
What it means
Formal versions of 给 for abstract things such as support, help, praise or punishment, used in official documents, the news and notices.
How it is built
给予 (jǐ yǔ) + (receiver) + abstract noun: 给予他们帮助, or 对 + receiver + 给予…: 对这次任务给予了高度评价. 对 + receiver + 予以 + two-syllable verb: 学校将对他们予以表彰.
When to use it
予以 is more formal still; it stood beside 加以 in lesson 3-4. Both often take 高度, 大力 or 一定的. 授予 confers titles, degrees and medals; 赋予 confers rights, meanings or a mission.
Watch out
✗ 予以他们帮助: with 予以 the receiver comes first, with 对. ✗ 给予一本书: neither is for concrete things; just say 给他一本书.

不少外国科学家对这次任务给予了高度评价。
Many foreign scientists spoke highly of the mission.
政府对受灾的家庭给予了一定的补贴。
The government gave some subsidies to the families hit by the disaster.
对在比赛中表现突出的学生，学校将予以表彰。
Pupils who perform outstandingly in the competition will be commended by the school.
