on the one hand …, on the other …

Structure

What it means

On the one hand …, on the other …: presents two sides of one matter, which may add up or pull against each other.

How it is built

(On the one hand I want to go abroad; on the other I cannot bear to leave my family).

When to use it

Neutral; common in essays and discussion. 也 adds a second side; 又 often marks a clash. 一边…一边… is for two actions at the same moment: 一边吃饭一边看电视.

Watch out

It weighs aspects or reasons, not two physical actions: ✗
