亦
also; too (the written 也)
Structure
主语 亦 + 动词/形容词 · 既…,亦…
What it means
“Also; too”: 亦 is the classical 也 and sits where 也 sits.
How it is built
Subject + 亦 + verb/adjective, or 既…,亦…: 本店节假日亦正常营业 (we are open as usual on public holidays too).
When to use it
Formal writing, speeches and notices, and set phrases such as 亦步亦趋 and 不亦乐乎. In conversation it sounds stilted, so say 也. 既…,亦… is the formal 既…,也….
Watch out
Like 也, it goes after the subject and before the verb, never at the start of a sentence. ✗ 亦我有所了解 ✓ 我亦有所了解.
