What it means

Describes a sudden, striking change of identity, role or look: to turn overnight into something new. From 《西游记》, where the Monkey King gives himself a shake and transforms.

How it is built

Subject (+ 从 + old identity) + 摇身一变 + 成了/成为/变成 + new identity: 旧工厂摇身一变,成了创意园区 (The old factory was reborn as a creative quarter).

When to use it

Admiring when said of a town, a building or a business, but often sarcastic about people: 骗子摇身一变,成了“专家” (the con man reinvented himself as an “expert”).
