What it means
Before a noun or verb phrase, 通过 means “through, by means of”: it names the way or the experience that led to a result.
How it is built
通过 + noun / verb phrase，subject + verb: 通过这次旅行，我认识了很多朋友 (Through this trip I got to know lots of people). Or after the subject: 我通过朋友认识了她.
When to use it
Use it for the method, channel or experience behind a result: 通过一年的努力，他终于通过了考试. As a verb you know it as “pass”: 通过考试.
Watch out
Never put it at the end as in English: ✗ 我认识了她通过朋友 ✓ 我通过朋友认识了她.

通过这次旅行，我认识了很多朋友。
Through this trip I got to know lots of people.
我是通过朋友认识她的。
I met her through a friend.
通过一年的努力，他终于通过了考试。
After a year of hard work, he finally passed the exam.
