遂

thereupon; and so (written 于是/就)

Structure
前因/前事 , (主语) 遂 结果

What it means

Thereupon; and so: classical 于是 or 就. The first clause gives a cause or an earlier event, and 遂 brings in what followed from it.

How it is built

Cause / earlier event,(subject)+ 遂 + result, before the verb: 雨越下越大,比赛遂改至次日举行 (The rain grew heavier, so the match was moved to the next day).

When to use it

History, written narrative and news; in speech say 于是 or 就. Like 就, it stands after any subject, right before the verb.

Watch out

Subject first: ✗ 遂国民党发动… ✓ 国民党遂发动…. Do not confuse it with 遂 “as one wishes” (顺遂, 遂心) or with 未遂 (attempted but failed).
