to be suspected of (an offence)
Structure
主语(嫌疑人) 涉嫌 违法行为(动词/动词短语)
What it means
To be suspected of an offence that has not been proved. Read it shè xián; it is the legal and news word.
How it is built
Suspect + 涉嫌 + offence (verb or verb phrase): 这名男子涉嫌诈骗,已被警方拘留 (the man is suspected of fraud and has been detained). Also 涉嫌犯罪, 涉嫌抄袭, 涉嫌侵权.
When to use it
Keeps a report fair: until a court has ruled, the media write 涉嫌, not 犯了. The noun 嫌疑 works differently: 有…的嫌疑, 嫌疑人 (lesson 3-18).
Watch out
The subject is the suspect, and it takes no 被: ✗ 这起案件涉嫌诈骗 ✗ 他被涉嫌诈骗 ✓ 他涉嫌诈骗. Never for anything good (✗ 涉嫌获奖).
