compare how well, fast or far two people do something

Structure

What it means

Compares how well, fast or far two people do something, by joining 比 (h1-19) with 得 (h2-10).

How it is built

A + 比 B + verb + 得 + adjective, or A + verb + 得 + 比 B + adjective: 王明比我跑得快 = 王明跑得比我快 (Wang Ming runs faster than me).

When to use it

Both word orders mean the same. To say “much faster”, add 多了 after the adjective: 快多了. If the verb has an object, say the verb twice: 他打球打得比我好 (he plays ball better than me).

Watch out

No 很 or 非常 before the adjective: ✗ 他跑得比我很快。 ✓ 他跑得比我快多了。 Don’t drop the repeated verb: ✗ 他打球得比我好。 ✓ 他打球打得比我好。
