What it means
式 (shì, style, model) turns the word before it into a label for a way of doing things: '…-style'. In commentary it is often critical, naming a method by its worst picture.
How it is built
Label (noun, verb phrase or chengyu) + 式 (+ 的) + noun: 填鸭式教学 (cramming-style teaching), 竭泽而渔式的开发. Short set terms drop 的; a coined label often goes in quotation marks: “一刀切”式的禁令.
When to use it
中式, 西式, 新式 are everyday words; open-ended labels like 保姆式服务 or 家长式管理 are written and journalistic. In speech say 像…那样的.
Watch out
The label goes before the noun: ✗开发竭泽而渔式. For how a person looks or acts at one moment use 似的, not 式: 他高兴得像个孩子似的.
Examples
填鸭式的教学只会让学生死记硬背，学不会独立思考。
Cramming-style teaching only makes students learn by rote; it never teaches them to think for themselves.
这种运动式的整治，风头一过，问题又回来了。
