What it means
The formal 把: the subject does something to a definite object, with a result. Used in laws, notices, announcements and the news.
How it is built
Subject + 将 + definite object + verb + result/place/person: 他将一生的积蓄捐给了老年大学 (he gave his life savings to the senior university). Notice: 请将手机关掉.
When to use it
The rules are those of 把 (lesson 1-6). In conversation 将 sounds stiff; use 把. 将 before a verb phrase means “will”: 最低缴费年限将由15年提高为20年.
Watch out
The verb can’t stand alone: ✗ 请将手机关。 ✓ 请将手机关掉。 Tell the two 将 apart: before an object it is 把; before a verb phrase it is “will”.
Examples
用十五年时间，将男职工的退休年龄从60岁延迟到63岁。
Over fifteen years, men’s retirement age will be raised from 60 to 63.
开会前，请将手机关掉。
Please switch off your phones before the meeting.
他将一生的积蓄都捐给了家乡的老年大学。
He gave his whole life’s savings to the senior university in his home town.
