What it means
为 (wéi) after a verb names the result: what something is divided into, changed into, elected as or regarded as.
How it is built
(把／将) A + 分／改／选／视／提高 + 为 + B: 专家把养老保险体系分为三大支柱 (experts divide the pension system into three pillars). Passive: 她被选为队长 (she was elected leader).
When to use it
Written and formal: rules, reports, the news. In speech say 分成, 改成, 选…当, 当成. Common ones: 分为, 改为, 选为, 视为, 称为, 成为, 作为; you know 被称为 (lesson 1-3).
Watch out
✗ 分成为三组。 ✓ 分为三组 or 分成三组: one result word only. And read 为 as wéi, not wèi.
