What it means
东边, 南边, 西边, 北边, 左边 and 右边 name the east, south, west, north, left and right side of something.
How it is built
Place + (的) + direction word: 路口的东边 (the east side of the crossroads), 我（的）左边 (on my left). Alone they are places: 车站在东边.
When to use it
Like 前边 and 后边, the direction word comes after the place it is measured from. The 的 can be dropped: 火车站北边.
Watch out
The word after 的 is the thing you mean: 路口的东边 is the east side of the crossroads, but 东边的路口 is the crossroads to the east.

车站在路口的东边。
The bus stop is on the east side of the crossroads.
我的左边是王明，右边是李月。
Wang Ming is on my left and Li Yue is on my right.
饭馆在马路的西边。
The restaurant is on the west side of the road.
