Structure
（从 起点） 到 时间／地方 为止 ， 情况／数量
What it means
“Up to, until, so far”: marks where a period or stretch ends; up to that point, this is the total or the situation.
How it is built
(从 + start) + 到 + time/place + 为止，situation or amount: 到2024年为止，一共产生了42枚金牌 (up to 2024, 42 golds had been won). 到目前为止 = so far.
When to use it
Often with 一共 or 已经. 为 is read wéi here, not wèi. 截至 is the formal written cousin used in news and reports.
Watch out
Keep both parts, in this order: ✗ 为止今天, ✗ 2024年为止 ✓ 到今天为止, 到2024年为止.
Examples
到2024年巴黎奥运会为止，乒乓球项目一共产生了42枚金牌。
Up to the 2024 Paris Games, 42 Olympic gold medals had been awarded in table tennis.
