Structure
主语 ＋ 动词短语一 ， 并 ＋ 动词短语二
What it means
Formal “and (also), and then”: adds a second action by the same subject that follows on from the first or goes further.
How it is built
Subject + verb phrase 1, 并 + verb phrase 2: 会议讨论了预算，并通过了三项决定 (The meeting discussed the budget and passed three resolutions).
When to use it
Written and formal Chinese: reports, news, papers. In speech people say 还 or 而且, or simply run the clauses together.
Watch out
It joins verbs and clauses, never nouns: ✗我并他 ✓我和他. Keep it apart from 并 before a negative (并不, 并没有), which means “actually not”.

同年11月，课题组分离出了有效成分的结晶，并把它命名为“青蒿素”。
In November that year the group isolated crystals of the active ingredient and named it artemisinin.
会议讨论了明年的预算，并通过了三项决定。
The meeting discussed next year’s budget and passed three resolutions.
警方很快找到了失踪的老人，并把他安全送回了家。
The police soon found the missing old man and brought him safely home.
