Usage and origin
艾 here means “to end, to stop” (not the plant mugwort): the trend has just begun and shows no sign of ending. A written phrase for movements, industries and fashions: 方兴未艾的新能源产业, 冰雪热方兴未艾. Do not use it of a fad that is fading, and note the tones: fāng xīng, not xìng.
