What it means
The reason why A happens is B: states a known result first, then explains its cause, putting the focus on the cause.
How it is built
Subject + 之所以 + result，是因为 + cause: 他之所以成功，是因为他从不放弃 (The reason he succeeded is that he never gives up). 是由于 can replace 是因为.
When to use it
Result first, cause second: the reverse of 因为…所以…. Use it when the result is already known and the cause is the point. Formal-leaning; common in essays and explanations.
Watch out
The subject goes before 之所以: ✗ 之所以他成功 ✓ 他之所以成功. Keep 是 in the second half: …，是因为堵车 is the standard form.

中国人之所以爱喝热水，是因为人们相信冷的东西会伤胃。
The reason Chinese people love hot water is the belief that cold things harm the stomach.
他之所以成功，是因为他从不放弃。
The reason he succeeded is that he never gives up.
