只见

and what met the eye was …: a narrative zoom

Structure
(走进一个场景) , 只见 眼前的情景

What it means

And what met the eye was …: a narrative zoom that cuts straight to the scene a character sees.

How it is built

(Character enters a scene),只见 + the scene: 我推开门,只见桌子上放着一封信 (I pushed open the door, and there on the table lay a letter).

When to use it

Classic storytelling style, still used in vivid written narration. There is no subject before 只见; what follows is the scene, often with 着 or 满是.

Watch out

Don’t read 只 as “only”: 只见 here just means “saw”. Don’t add a subject: ✗ 我推开门,我只见… (that reads as “I only saw”) ✓ 我推开门,只见….

Examples

刘姥姥走进大观园,只见处处新奇。
Granny Liu walked into the garden and saw novelty at every turn.
我推开门,只见桌子上放着一封信。
I pushed open the door, and there on the table lay a letter.
