at this point; with this; and so (marking an end or a turning point)

Structure

What it means

“At this point; with this”: closes a sequence of events and states where things now stand: an ending, a running total or a turning point.

How it is built

Events。 至此,救援工作全部完成 (the last passenger got off safely; with that, the rescue was complete).

When to use it

Written; typical of history writing and news. 到此为止 is its spoken cousin for “that is all for now”.

Watch out

It looks back, so what comes before must lead up to it. For a plain “then” use 然后 or 随后, not 至此.

Examples

Under Yongzheng the ban grew stricter still. With that, the opening Ricci had made was all but closed.
