What it means
Gives a share in data reports: the part “accounts for …% of” the whole.
How it is built
Part + (约) + 占 + whole + 的 + 百分之 + number (+左右/以上/以下): 肺癌死亡约占全部癌症死亡的百分之二十八 (Lung cancer is about 28% of cancer deaths).
When to use it
Met in 1-18; common in health and economic reports. 将近一半, 三分之一 or 两成 can replace the percentage; 占比 is the noun: 占比为28%.
Watch out
Part first, whole after 占, and 百分之 before the number: ✗二十八百分之. A rate with no whole uses 为 or 达: ✗生存率占40.5% ✓五年生存率为40.5%.

Lung cancer accounts for about 28 per cent of all cancer deaths.
在这家医院的住院病人中，外地患者占了将近一半。
Patients from other provinces make up nearly half of this hospital’s in-patients.
