What it means
A figure is level with the one it is measured against: neither up nor down. Read it chí píng. With 增长 (up) and 下降 (down) it completes the trio of economic news.
How it is built
Figure + 与／同 + point of comparison + (基本) + 持平: 一季度住房成交量与去年同期基本持平 (first-quarter home sales were roughly level with last year). Tables and headlines: 同比持平.
When to use it
Economic and statistical reports. The comparison is usually 上年, 上月 or 去年同期; 基本 softens it to 'roughly level'; 同比持平 = flat year on year.
Watch out
No object and no degree adverb: ✗ 很持平. It compares figures, not qualities: for equal skill or strength say 相当 or 不相上下.
Examples
居民消费价格2024年只上涨了0.2%，2025年全年与上年持平。
Consumer prices rose just 0.2% in 2024, and over 2025 they were flat on the year before.
今年一季度，全市住房的成交量与去年同期基本持平。
In the first quarter of this year, home sales in the city were roughly level with the same period last year.
这家银行的一年期存款利率与几家大银行持平，并没有更高。
This bank’s one-year deposit rate is level with the big banks’; it is no higher.
