What it means
Literary 'from this': links a result, conclusion or chain of events back to what was just described. 此 is the written form of 这, so 由此 is roughly 从这里.
How it is built
Event or fact, then subject + 由此 + verb (认识到, 产生, 引起, 升级): 他由此认识到问题很严重 (from this he realised the problem was serious).
When to use it
Written and formal; in speech say 所以 or 从这件事上…. 由此可见 (it can be seen from this) opens a conclusion. Family: 因此 because of this, 为此 for this purpose, 对此 about this, 至此 up to this point, 此外 besides.
Watch out
Don't mix up the 此 family: 由此 is 'from this' (source or cause), 从此 is 'from then on' (time). ✗他由此再也没回来。 ✓他从此再也没回来。 (He never came back after that.)
