What it means
According to, in accordance with: the written 按照 or 根据 of laws, notices and rulings.
How it is built
依／依照 + law / rule / contract + verb; 依据 + facts / evidence + verb: 仲裁委员会依据双方的证据作出了裁决 (the committee based its ruling on both sides’ evidence).
When to use it
依 lives in set phrases (依法, 依次, 依约) and in 依我看. 依照 means following a rule to the letter: 依照规定办理. 依据 bases a judgment on facts and is also a noun: 法律依据, 以…为依据.
Watch out
✗ 依照我看 ✓ 依我看: only 依 works here. 依照 is not a noun: ✗ 没有依照 ✓ 没有依据.
Examples
依照《劳动合同法》，公司违法解除合同，要按经济补偿标准的二倍支付赔偿金。
Under the Labour Contract Law, a company that ends a contract unlawfully must pay compensation at twice the severance rate.
仲裁委员会依据双方提交的证据作出了裁决。
The arbitration committee based its ruling on the evidence submitted by both sides.
