What it means
Written “at” a price or “by” a score: 以 names the figure at which a deal is struck or a contest decided.
How it is built
Subject + 以 + figure (+ 的价格) + verb: 这套房子以三百二十万元的价格成交 (the flat sold for 3.2 million yuan). Verbs: 成交, 起拍, 落槌, 售出, 中标, 胜, 战胜, 当选.
When to use it
Constant in reports on auctions, property, shares and sport: 以3比1战胜对手, 以三分之二的票数当选. In speech say 卖了三百万 or 三比一赢了.
Watch out
The figure goes before the verb. ✗ 成交以8.1亿元 ✓ 以8.1亿元成交. Don’t confuse it with 以…为… “to take … as …”, where 以 governs a noun, not an amount.
Examples
作品以4.5亿元起拍，最终以8.1亿元落槌。
Bidding opened at 450 million yuan, and the hammer finally came down at 810 million.
这套老房子上个月以三百二十万元的价格成交。
The old flat sold last month for 3.2 million yuan.
决赛中，他们以3比1战胜对手，拿下了冠军。
In the final they beat their opponents 3–1 to take the title.
