一改…

to completely change; to break with (a former state)

Structure

What it means

To change completely, breaking at one stroke with a former state. 一 means “at one stroke, completely”; the object is the old state being left behind.

How it is built

Subject + 一改 + (往日/以往/过去的) + old state: 这座老城一改往日的冷清 (the old town has shaken off its former quiet). The new state often follows: …,变得热闹起来.

When to use it

Written style, common in news and reviews:

Watch out

Put the old state after 一改, not the new one.
