要不是…

if it were not for …; had it not been that …

Structure
要不是 已经发生的事 , (早就/就)… 了

What it means

If it were not for …; had it not been that …: a counterfactual. Something really happened, and the main clause says what would otherwise have followed.

How it is built

要不是 + what really happened,(subject) + 早就/就 + imagined result + 了: 要不是你提醒我,我早就忘了 (If you had not reminded me, I would have forgotten long ago).

When to use it

Spoken and neutral; 若不是 is the written form. Unlike 如果不, the 要不是 clause is always a fact. It often expresses thanks or relief, sometimes blame.

Watch out

The 要不是 clause states a fact, not a guess about the future: ✗ 要不是明天下雨,我们就去 ✓ 如果明天不下雨,我们就去. The main clause usually ends in 了.

Examples

要不是亲身吃过亏,很多人是不会相信这句话的。
Had they not lost out themselves, many would not believe it.
要不是你提醒我,我早就忘了。
If you had not reminded me, I would have forgotten long ago.
