Structure
数 + 点 + 数 · 分母 + 分之 + 分子 · 百分之 + 数 · A 是 B 的 + 数 + 倍
What it means
How to say decimals (点), fractions (分之), percentages (百分之) and multiples (倍).
How it is built
2.5 = 二点五. Bottom + 分之 + top: 三分之一 (1/3). 百分之 + number: 百分之二十 (20%). A 是 B 的 + number + 倍: A 是 B 的两倍 (A is twice B).
When to use it
Discounts use these too: 八折就是百分之八十 (80% of the price). 三分之二的店 means two thirds of the shops.
Watch out
Fractions say the bottom first: ✗ 一分之三 ✓ 三分之一. And A 比 B 大一倍 means “twice as big”, not “the same size”.
Examples
八折就是百分之八十。
八折 means 80 per cent.
商场里三分之二的店都在打折。
Two thirds of the shops in the mall are having a sale.
他这次考了八十九点五分。
He got 89.5 on this test.
这件外套的价格是那件的两倍。
This coat costs twice as much as that one.
