退一步（来）说
even granting that; even if we concede the point
Structure
论点 ； 退一步（来）说 ， 就算／即使 假设的让步 ， 也／还是 结论不变
What it means
For argument's sake you grant the other side a point, then show your conclusion still stands: 'even granting that …'.
How it is built
Point; 退一步说，就算／即使 + supposition，也／还是 + same conclusion: 退一步说，就算钱不成问题，时间也来不及 (Even if money were no object, there isn't time).
When to use it
Debates and argument. 退一步讲 is the same; spoken 退一万步讲 is emphatic, 'even in the most unlikely case'. What you grant is only supposed; for a real concession use 固然…但是 (4-5).
Watch out
Not for adding one more reason on your own side; that is 况且 or 再说. ✗ 退一步说，他还很聪明.
Examples
人生来就有欲望；退一步说，就算人性中有善的种子，也要靠教化才能发芽。
People are born with desires; and even granting that human nature holds a seed of goodness, it takes upbringing to make it sprout.
这个方案成本太高。退一步说，就算钱不成问题，时间也来不及。
This plan costs too much. And even if money were no object, there still isn’t time.
退一万步讲，就算他真的错了，你也不该当着大家的面骂他。
Even supposing he really was in the wrong, you still had no business shouting at him in front of everyone.
