说到底
in the end; when all is said and done; at bottom
Structure
说到底 ,结论 / 主语 说到底 是…
What it means
In the end; when all is said and done; at bottom. It cuts through the details to what the speaker sees as the heart of the matter.
How it is built
说到底 at the head of the sentence with a comma, or after the subject, usually + 是/还是/就是 + the root cause: 这件事说到底还是钱的问题 (when it comes down to it, this is about money).
When to use it
Neutral; common in speech, comment pieces and features. 归根到底 is more formal; 说白了 means “to put it bluntly”; 总之 sums up what has been said without digging for a cause.
Watch out
Not “finally” in a sequence of events: ✗说到底,电梯装好了 ✓最后,电梯装好了. Don’t confuse it with 到底 in questions: 你到底同意不同意? (so do you or don’t you?).
Examples
说到底,加装电梯不只是技术问题,更是街坊之间的一次协商。
When all is said and done, adding a lift is not just a technical matter; it is a negotiation between neighbours.
这件事说到底还是钱的问题。
When it comes down to it, this is a question of money.
他们吵来吵去,说到底都是为了孩子好。
For all their arguing, at bottom they both want what is best for the child.
