Structure
整数（十、百、千、万…） 余 ＋ 量词／名词
What it means
余 after a round number means 多, ‘more than, -odd’: 十余年 (over ten years), 300余人 (300-odd people).
How it is built
Round number + 余 + measure word/noun, where 多 would sit: 这家博物馆收藏了两万余件文物 (the museum holds over twenty thousand relics).
When to use it
Written: news, reports, museum labels; in speech say 多. Its position sets the size: 十余万人 = the extra is in tens of thousands (110,000, 150,000…); 十万余人 = just over 100,000.
Watch out
Not after the measure word, and not with 多: ✗18万件余 ✓18万余件 (or 18万件以上); ✗十多余年 ✓十余年.

这次地震造成300余间房屋倒塌。
The earthquake brought down more than 300 houses.
他在国外生活了十余年，去年才回国。
He lived abroad for over ten years and only came back last year.
这家博物馆收藏了两万余件文物。
The museum holds more than twenty thousand cultural relics.
