a plain statement said with a rising voice becomes a question
Structure
What it means
Say an ordinary statement with your voice rising at the end and it becomes a yes/no question, with no 吗. It usually shows surprise or checks what you think you heard.
How it is built
Statement + rising voice (? in writing): 你没吃过月饼? (You’ve never had a mooncake?)
When to use it
With 吗 the question sounds neutral; without it, it sounds surprised, like English “You’re leaving tomorrow?”: 你明天就走? Common in conversation.
Watch out
Let your voice clearly rise, or it sounds like a plain statement. For a calm, neutral question, add
Examples
You’ve never had a mooncake?
You’re leaving tomorrow, already?
You made all these dishes yourself?
