every time … comes round; whenever
Structure
What it means
Whenever a certain date, occasion or situation comes round, something regularly happens. It stresses a repeated, often traditional link.
How it is built
(Every Spring Festival we go back home).
When to use it
Both are more written than 每次. 每逢 takes a date or occasion: 佳节, 周末, 下雨天. 每当 takes a clause, often ending 的时候. Classic line: 每逢佳节倍思亲 (at every festival I miss my family more).
Watch out
每逢 takes an occasion, not a full clause: ✗ 每逢我听到这首歌 ✓ 每当我听到这首歌. The main clause usually needs 都 or 就.
Examples
Every Mid-Autumn people think of their families.
Whenever I hear this song I think of university.
