How it is built
A + 居 + range + 首位／第…位／前列: 广东的GDP居全国首位 (Guangdong's GDP ranks first nationally). Typical ranges: 全国, 世界, 全省, 同类产品.
When to use it
Written register for rankings in news and reports. Spoken: 排第一, 排在前面. Related: 名列第三 (ranks third), 位居榜首 (tops the list), 仅次于 (second only to).
Watch out
Name the range unless context makes it clear: 居全国首位, 居世界前列. Keep it for writing; in conversation say 排第一.
