since / now that A (a fact both sides accept), B follows
Structure
What it means
“Since, now that”: A is a fact both speakers already know or accept, and B draws a conclusion from it.
How it is built
既然 + A,(subject) + 就 + B: 既然你不舒服,就早一点儿回家吧 (since you’re unwell, go home early).
When to use it
B is often a suggestion with 吧, an order or a question. 因为 gives a reason; 既然 starts from a shared fact and draws a conclusion, so it cannot answer “why?”.
Watch out
就 goes after the subject of the second half, never before it: ✗ 既然医生让你别抽,就你别抽了。 To answer 为什么, use 因为, not 既然.
Examples
Since you’re not feeling well, go home early.
Since the doctor has told you not to smoke, stop.
Since everyone agrees, let’s settle it like that.
