What it means
Three written words for 'in total': 合计 adds up the items just named, 共计 gives a grand total (the formal 一共), 累计 adds up what builds over time.
How it is built
Items / whole / time span + 合计／共计／累计 + (verb) + amount: 今年以来，这家银行累计发放贷款一千多亿元 (Since the start of the year the bank has lent over 100 billion yuan).
When to use it
All three run through financial and economic reports: 房租和水电合计三千元, 共计三百人. 累计 comes with a time span. In conversation say 一共 or 加起来.
Watch out
No 累计 for a count at one moment: ✗ 会场里累计有三百人 ✓ 共有三百人. Don't add 一共 in front. Spoken 合计 (hé ji) is a verb, 'to talk over': 咱们合计合计.
Examples
这次活动的场地费和宣传费合计五万元。
The venue and the publicity for the event came to fifty thousand yuan between them.
本届运动会的参赛运动员共计三千多名。
These Games have more than three thousand competitors in all.
今年以来，这家银行累计发放贷款一千多亿元。
Since the start of the year the bank has lent out more than 100 billion yuan in total.
