敢情
so that’s it; so it turns out (northern spoken)
Structure
敢情 句子(刚明白过来的真相)
What it means
So that’s it; so it turns out. Northern colloquial: the speaker suddenly sees how things really are, often with surprise, amusement or mild complaint.
How it is built
敢情 + the truth just grasped, often set up by 我说… or 怪不得…: 我说他怎么天天这么精神,敢情每天晚上都去泡澡 (no wonder he’s always so lively: turns out he goes for a soak every evening).
When to use it
Like 原来 but chattier; heard in Beijing and the north-east. It can also mean “naturally, of course”: 敢情好! (That would be great!)
Watch out
Keep it out of formal writing, where 原来 is right. Use it for a discovery, not for something you knew all along.
Examples
我心想:敢情东北人是这么过冬的!
And I thought: so this is how north-easterners get through the winter!
我说他怎么天天这么精神,敢情每天晚上都去泡澡。
No wonder he is always so full of beans: turns out he goes for a soak every evening.
你不是说不来吗?敢情是骗我的啊!
Didn’t you say you weren’t coming? So you were having me on!
