Structure
多少 （+ 量词） + 名词 ？ · 东西 + 多少钱 （+ 一 + 量词）？
What it means
多少 asks “how many?” or “how much?” with no limit on the answer; 多少钱 asks a price.
How it is built
多少 (+ measure word) + noun: 多少（个）学生 (how many students). Thing + 多少钱: 这个多少钱？ For one: 一个多少钱？ or 多少钱一个？
When to use it
几 expects a small number, usually under ten; 多少 is for any number. You also know 多少 from 你的手机号是多少？
Watch out
✗ 几孩子 ✓ 几个孩子. 几 needs a measure word before a noun; after 多少 it can be dropped: 多少学生 is fine.
