What it means

Thanks to; benefiting from. 得益 is to gain benefit, and 得益于 + a noun phrase names the cause of a good result.

How it is built

得益于 + cause，+ good result; or result +（很大程度上／主要）得益于 + cause: 得益于室内滑雪场，南方人夏天也能滑雪 (Thanks to indoor ski slopes, people in the south can ski even in summer).

When to use it

Positive and a little formal: news, reports, speeches. In speech say 多亏了 or 幸亏 (lesson 1-25). 由于 is a neutral “because of”. 有利于 (lesson 1-18) points the other way: A 有利于 B, but B 得益于 A.

Watch out

Only for a good outcome: ✗得益于大雪，比赛取消了 ✓由于大雪，比赛取消了.

他的中文进步这么快，很大程度上得益于每天和同事聊天。
