Structure
前一句 。／； 除此之外 ， 还／也 …
What it means
“Besides this; apart from this”: 此 points back to what has just been said, and the clause either adds to it or excludes everything else.
How it is built
Previous point 。／； 除此之外 ， + 还／也 … (adds) or a negative／都 (excludes): 他每天跑步半小时，除此之外，什么运动也不做 (apart from that he does no exercise at all).
When to use it
It stands at the head of its clause, followed by a comma. 此外 (1-24) is the shorter written form; in speech say 另外 or 除了这个以外.
Watch out
The next word flips the meaning. ✓ 除此之外，还有一个问题 (one more problem). ✓ 除此之外，没有别的问题 (no other problem). Choose 还／也 to add, a negative or 都 to exclude.
Examples
鉴定一件古瓷，要看形状、颜色和花纹；除此之外，还可以借助科学仪器。
To authenticate an old piece you look at its shape, colour and decoration; besides this, you can use scientific instruments.
这份工作工资不高，除此之外，离家也太远。
This job doesn’t pay well, and apart from that it’s too far from home.
他每天跑步半小时，除此之外，什么运动也不做。
He runs for half an hour a day; apart from that he does no exercise at all.
