不知 + 怎么 + 的
somehow; for some reason (one cannot explain)
Structure
(主语) 不知怎么的 , 意外的事/说不清原因的感觉
What it means
“Somehow, for some reason”: 不知怎么的 marks an event or feeling that comes with no cause the speaker can give.
How it is built
不知怎么的 + , + unexpected event or feeling, at the head of a clause or just after the subject: 今天早上不知怎么的,闹钟没响 (for some reason my alarm didn’t go off this morning).
When to use it
Speech and narrative prose, before a change of mood, a mishap or a sudden impulse. 不知怎的 is more literary, 不知道怎么回事 more colloquial.
Watch out
It replaces a reason, so don’t add one: ✗ 不知怎么的,因为下雨…… Not 不管怎么样 “whatever happens”, which looks ahead instead of back to an unseen cause.
